Eat for the Crunch
Since the Credit Crunch began I have been hearing the same story every day, "I just can't afford to buy fruit and vegetables because they are expensive to buy and they go off before I get a chance to eat them all." We all know of the health benefits of fruit and vege but many of us still don't get our 2 & 5 everyday.
There is however good news! You can save a few dollars and still eat fruit and vegetables...
Vegetables can be used as sides, main dishes and in dishes to help them stretch that little bit further. Grate some carrot and zucchini into pasta dishes or grate some cauliflower as some Not Rice.
Grow Your Own
I have more and more patients telling me that they have been growing their own vegetables and can't believe how much they are saving by putting in a little of work to their own backyard. Many also comment on the flavour of the vegetables they grow at home and the amounts they have managed to grow in such a short time. This does however mean we will need to adjust to eating in season fruits and vegetables which will further increase the variety.
It can be as easy as a bag of potting mix, a pot or polystyrene box, a watering can and some in season seeds. Most packets will tell you the best time of the year to grow the vegetables for your region. If you have more time and more space you can simply make your own vegie patch in the yard.
Freezer Foods
Frozen Vegetables are a godsend for many individuals who complain about not having enough time to scratch themselves let alone wash and cut vegetables. Frozen vegetables come pre-cut and can go
straight into the Microwave, less than 10 minutes and you have vegetables.
